Is PVC the most dangerous plastic? ECHA’s call for a ban
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) produced the report on the phase-out of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), highlighting the urgent need for regulatory action due to the material’s toxic impacts on both human health and the environment.
The report identifies significant risks associated with PVC throughout its life cycle—from production to disposal—and emphasises that safer alternatives are available for all current uses of the material. ECHA’s findings underline that, despite long-standing efforts by the PVC industry to mitigate risks, these efforts have not been sufficient to eliminate its harmful effects, such as the release of microplastics and toxic chemicals. The report concludes that a broad restriction on PVC would be the most effective and future-proof option to manage these risks and prevent regrettable substitution with equally hazardous materials.
